Breakfast Tea Guide: What Tea Should I Have With Breakfast?

One of my favourite things to have for breakfast on a Sunday is eggs on toast with a hot tea. But with so many ways to make eggs and so many different tea varieties, I figured there needs to be a guide on which teas go with what breakfast foods.

The trick to making an eggs-ellent breakfast is to know what tea variety pairs perfectly with which type of food, and below I’m going to give you the run down on which one of our teas will make your next breakfast taste even more incredible.

My favourite eggs to make are spicy and have leafy greens, so the perfect pairing for my breakfast is Tie Guan Yin. Tie Guan Yin is the perfect palate cleanser for spicy meals.

CHLOE’S SPICY EGG RECIPE:

Prep & Cook Time – 8-10 minutes

Ingredients

Splash of oil

4 leaves of silver beet

3 heaped teaspoons of minced garlic

2 heaped teaspoons of minced chilli

1 teaspoon of fresh ginger (optional)

2-3 fresh eggs (depending how much you like to eat)

- Vegan option: 200g of tofu with turmeric powder

2 pieces of toast

Sriracha Mayo to garnish, found in most supermarkets (my favourite is The Flying Goose Sriracha Mayo – it’s vegan)

 

Method

1.     Heat pan with oil on a medium heat

2.     Roughly chop the leafy parts of the silver beet and add to the hot pan

3.     Toss through fresh ginger, minced garlic and chilli and cook until silver beet leaves have wilted (at this point put your toast & kettle on)

4.     Whisk eggs in a separate container and then scramble through the cooked silver beet. If using tofu, crumble into bite size pieces and mix through with turmeric powder.

5.     Once cooked, place on top of your toast and garnish with sriracha mayo, then add the kettle water to your Tie Guan Yin. Bon Appetite!

These eggs are the best way to start your day! The chilli and ginger increases your metabolism so it’s going to help you start burning calories, you’ll feel fuller for longer and the Tie Guan Yin will help to aid the digestion of your food, boost the immune system and assist weight loss.

What Tea Should I Have With My Eggs?

Basic Eggs (fried, poached, scrambled etc) & bacon on toast

  • Tie Guan Yin (Oolong Tea) – perfect paired with pork & is palate cleansing so will cut through the grease of the bacon

Eggs Benedict

Smashed Avo & Eggs

  • Longjing (Green Tea) – It’s vegetal and grassy notes make it perfect paired with avocado

Mexican-Styled Eggs

  • Yunnan (Black Tea) – smokiness of Mexican foods and red meats are well balanced with black teas

Classic Omelet

  • Longjing (Green Tea) – It’s vegetal and grassy flavours pair well with cheese

Hearty English Breakfast (with sausages, mushrooms & tomatoes)

  • Tie Guan Yin (Oolong Tea) – perfect with meats and are perfect for cleansing the palate and cutting through greasy foods

  • Yunnan or Yingde (Black Tea) – perfect with red meat because of their high tannin level

Scrambled Tofu on toast (vegan option)

  • Longjing (Green Tea) – balances tofu & spices like turmeric beautifully

Fresh fruit

  • Jasmine Tea – complements the freshness and acidity of fruits

  • Tie Guan Yin (Oolong Tea) – perfect with sweet fruits

Cakes

  • Tie Guan Yin (Oolong Tea) – perfect for sweets, especially those with caramel notes.

Plain toast

Oats

This depends on the fruit and sweeteners you add, see “fresh fruit” and “plain toast” to get a rough idea on what tea pairing to have

Cereal with cold milk

Ew! Hot tea with cold food. Talk about a stomach upset.

If you feel like a cup of tea after your cereal, have Madarine Ball, Wolfberry, Lemon Ball or Peppermint tea to cleanse your palate.
